Simon Horrocks

Simon Horrocks

Head of Learning Innovation and Development

Simon leads the work of the Learning & Teaching Enhancement team. Working closely with the Deputy Principal (Education & Students), the Dean for Teaching, Learning and Student Experience, and Faculty Associate Deans for Learning & Teaching, Simon ensures that the work of the team is focused on institutional priorities for learning and teaching.

Having started his career as an academic in film and media studies, Simon has held leadership positions at a number of universities.

He was Assistant Director for Development, Learning and Teaching at the University of Wales, acting as the OU’s representative with government, the funding council and senior colleagues from other universities.

More recently, he has advised the University of Edinburgh about the development of online provision and helped Cardiff University shape their online and blended learning approach in response to the pandemic.

Outside of work, Simon attends as much live music as he can and is a long-suffering supporter of Cardiff City.

Beth Cairns FHEA

Beth Cairns

Academic Development Partner

Beth specialises in inclusive and accessible education, providing training and support for diversifying and critically reflecting on teaching practice and pedagogies. She helps deliver the Stirling Framework for Evidencing Learning and Teaching Enhancement (SFELTE) and the PG Cert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education.

Beth has worked in education for many years, starting as a primary school teacher and moving into Higher Education in the last five years. Over that period, she has taught and lectured in Criminology and Sociology.

For the last six years, Beth has been an advisor and consultant on equality and diversity within higher education.

Outside work Beth likes reading, spending time with friends and playing video games.

Emma Gilbert

Academic Development Coordinator

Emma supports the Academic Development Partners to implement a full range of development activities. Her work mainly focuses on the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (PGCLTHE) and Stirling Framework for Evidencing Learning and Teaching Enhancement (SFELTE) programmes.

After graduating in 2011 with a BA (Hons) in French Studies, Emma proceeded to work as a Senior Project Manager within the language service industry. She managed the translation of a vast array of documentation as well as coordinating interpreters for events at a global scale. Emma holds qualifications in Project Management and has been with Stirling University in Coordinator roles since 2018.

Susan Greig SFHEA

Susan Greig

Academic Development Partner

Susan is programme lead for the Stirling Framework for Evidencing Learning and Teaching Enhancement (SFELTE) experience Route.

This is a supported route for staff and doctoral students who teach to gain professional accreditation of Advance HE as an Associate Fellow, Fellow, or Senior Fellow. She also teaches on the PG Cert in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education which is the SFELTE taught route to fellowship.

Susan completed a BA (Hons) in Fine Art and spent a few years as a practicing artist before doing a Masters in Multimedia and Interactive Systems. She started to work in online distance education at Herriot Watt University in 2001.

She has since worked in learning technology, learning design and professional accreditation at Queen Margaret University and the University of Edinburgh. Susan has PG Certificates in Professional Education and Digital Education and is a Senior Fellow of the HEA. She is currently undertaking a Doctorate in Education at the University of Stirling.

To contribute to work in the sector Susan is a member of the Executive Committee for the Scottish Higher Educational Developers (SHED).

Outside work, Susan enjoys Zumba, Yoga, time with her family and walking with her pet dog Milo.

Dr. Tanya Lubicz-Nawrocka SFHEA

Academic Development Partner

Tanya is programme director for the Postgraduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education (PGCLTHE), which is the taught route to fellowship via our Stirling Framework for Evidencing Learning and Teaching Enhancement (SFELTE).

The PGCLTHE programme supports new colleagues at the University to explore and enhance learning and teaching and earn fellowship of Advance HE via this accredited programme. Tanya also leads on coordinating our Learning and Teaching Festival and our annual events programme, and she is Chair of the Inclusive Curriculum Working Group.

After completing a liberal arts bachelor’s degree at Colgate University and working for several years in the US, Tanya moved to the UK for a Masters programme at Cambridge University focusing on the sociology of education. She has stayed on and lived in the UK for over 10 years now, working at universities and educational charities to support staff and student development.

In 2020, she completed a part-time PhD in Education while working full-time alongside it with the University of Edinburgh. She has published and presented widely on curriculum co-creation, student-staff partnerships, student engagement, and inclusive curricula.

Outside work, Tanya enjoys travelling and, closer to home, spending lots of time walking with her
Siberian Husky, Islay.

Brendan Owers FHEA

Brendan Owers

Senior Learning Technology and Design Specialist

Brendan provides operational leadership for learning technology and design activity within Learning and Teaching Enhancement. Liaising with senior academic colleagues and faculties, Brendan is responsible for ensuring effective use of team resources that contribute to the institutional enhancement of learning and teaching.

Brendan provides line management for the team’s Learning Technology and Design Specialists and Learning Technology and Design Officer.

Brendan started working as a Learning Technologist at Edinburgh College and it was there where his interest in digital education grew. Since then has held a number of roles supporting the provision of postgraduate online programmes within University of Edinburgh’s Medical School; spanning learning design, content development and programme coordination.

More recently Brendan has led on a VLE replacement project together with a leading role in the development of a new suite of online MAs at Queen Margaret University. Brendan completed his MSc in Blended and Online Education in 2019, has a PG Certificate in Academic Practice and is a Fellow of the HEA.

Outside of work, Brendan enjoys spending time outdoors with his family and can regularly be found on a 5-a-side football pitch.

Sarah Docherty FHEA

Sarah Docherty

Learning Technology and Design Specialist

Sarah is the Learning Technologies and Design Specialist for the Faculty of Arts and Humanities with involvement in learning design initiatives and digital skills development across the disciplines.

As an experienced early years teacher and lecturer in education, Sarah is passionate about early years pedagogies and practices including slow, relational and critical pedagogies and the ways in which they can influence the HE context.

Sarah enjoys working collaboratively with colleagues across the institution to look at best practices in learning design, transitions and ways to create student centred curriculum in face to face, hybrid and online contexts.

Outside of work you will most likely find Sarah in the mountains on her skis or learning some new tricks on the slackline.

Louise McIntosh FHEA

Louise McIntosh

Learning Technology and Design Specialist

Louise works Wednesday to Friday and is the main person responsible for the learning technology support for the Faculty of Social Sciences.

After completing a BSc. (Hons) in Industrial Design and a PG Certificate in Multimedia Production Techniques, Louise worked for a few years developing computer-based training materials for the department of Biochemistry at Dundee University as well as several small software companies.

Louise started work at Stirling in 1999 and was instrumental in the design and development of someof the first online programmes at Stirling.

She has since gained a Masters in Advanced Learning Technology from the University of Lancaster and is a Fellow of the HEA.

Outside work, Louise loves to travel and spend time with her family and cats.

Karoline Nanfeldt

Karoline Nanfeldt

Learning Technology and Design Specialist

Karoline is the main person responsible for the learning technology support for the Faculty of Natural Science.

She also manages the online modules delivered via Insendi/iStirling, where she leads on the learning design for new modules and day-to-day support with the platform.

She also participates in several projects across the University, for example computer-based exams and renovation of our learning spaces.

Karoline moved to Scotland from Denmark to complete a MA (Hons) in Psychology from the University of Edinburgh, writing a dissertation on whether approaches to studying predicts statistical reasoning.

She interned on the lecture recording project at the university and later went on to working as a learning technologist after graduation in the School of Engineering and thereafter worked at Heriot-Watt University for 2 years before joining the University of Stirling in 2020.

She has received the Association of Learning Technology Team Award twice.

Outside work, Karoline loves to knit garments in soft wool and spending time with her dog, Fayla, for their dog sport hoopers.

Andy Sim

Andy Sim

Media Producer

Andy makes high quality digital media for the University, mostly in the form of teaching videos for online programmes, but since joining in 2020 has worked across the institution.

He manages and operates the Information Services Studio in Cottrell building, which is equipped with teleprompter and chromakey technology as well as camera, lighting and audio treatment.

Andy graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design at the University of Dundee, and has since worked in corporate and music video fields, as well as in higher education for the University of Abertay Dundee and University of Glasgow.

Outside work, Andy also makes independent arts documentaries.

Korina Antonaki

Korina Antonaki

Learning Technology and Design Officer

Korina is responsible for providing learning technology support across faculties and is involved in various projects such as the development of the new WordPress site, Learning and Teaching Conference 2024 etc.

Korina has most recently worked as a Learning Designer developing programmes for numerous institutions. She has become very enthusiastic about blending technology with learning as well as helping learners build confidence in their educational journey ever since.

She has graduated with a Linguistics MA(Hons) from the University of Edinburgh and has a solid foundation in Cognitive Science and programming.

Overall, Korina finds immense joy in being creative, making stuff and has recently discovered her deep interest in web development.

Jamie McIntyre

Jamie McIntyre

Learning Technology and Design Specialist

Jamie is responsible for providing learning technology support for the Stirling Management School and the Faculty of Health Sciences and Sport.

As part of a team of Learning Technology and Design Specialists, Jamie provides specialist guidance, training and support in learning technologies such as Canvas, Panopto, Padlet and Poll Everywhere.

Jamie has been working in Higher Education since 2009, firstly as a Librarian and latterly in the field of Learning Technology.

Jamie has an MA (Hons) History from the University of Glasgow and a Pg Diploma in Information Management and Library Studies from the University of Strathclyde.  

Outside of work, Jamie enjoys spending as much time as possible outdoors with his family and chairs the committee of his local community football club.

Simon FitzPatrick

Specialist Learning Designer (Online)

Simon works as a specialist Learning Designer for Futurelearn courses and is currently preparing for the launch of ‘Heart of Scotland: History and Heritage of Stirling at 900 Years’ as part of Stirling’s 900th anniversary celebrations.

He has worked in HE for a several years, most recently at Moray House, University of Edinburgh, where he supported the rollout of a new VLE across the School of Education and worked with academic colleagues on course learning design and development.

Simon graduated in Medieval and Modern History from the University of London, completed an MA in Educational Technology from the University of Leicester and has a Postgraduate Certificate of Education.

Outside of work, he plays country bass guitar in Newcastle-upon-Tyne and races small sailing dinghies on the Northumberland coast.
