How-to AI AI Assessment Scale | FAQs

AI Assessment Scale | FAQs

The AI Assessment Scale (AIAS) is a practical framework designed to guide staff and students understand the role of Generative AI in assessments. It offers a transparent scale from no use permitted to AI-generated output expected, helping clarify expectations around what kinds of AI use are appropriate for each assessment task.

From Autumn 2025, the scale is embedded within all Canvas modules.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What is the AI Assessment Scale (AIAS)?

The AIAS is a practical framework to guide the appropriate and ethical use of Generative AI (GenAI) in assessment. It helps staff to inform students about the expected level of GenAI used in each assessment exercise. See the AI Assessment Scale website for further information.

Why is Stirling introducing the AIAS for all modules in 2025/26?

Following a successful trial in 2024/25 by the Faculty of Natural Sciences (FNS) and the Faculty of Health Sciences and Sport (FHSS), the AIAS will provide staff and students with a common framework, and language for the appropriate use of GenAI across all assessments and modules. This aims to ensure all students are supported to understand what level of GenAI is appropriate for each assessment exercise leading to clear structure will allow for reduced cases of academic misconduct.

Do I need to redesign my assessment for the Autumn 2025/2026 semester?

No, the deadline has passed for new assessments to be approved for the Autumn semester. In Canvas, you need to choose the level of the AIAS that is most appropriate for your existing assessment and provide the students with any supplementary guidance about the use of GenAI that would be helpful.

What if my assessment does not neatly fall into one of the AIAS level descriptions?

Choose the AIAS level that most closely matches your expectations for the use of GenAI in the assessment and provide supplementary guidance to make your expectations as clear as possible.

Can different assessments within the same module use different AIAS levels?

Yes. You can apply different levels within a single module depending on the purpose and design of each assessment.

What should I do if a student uses AI above the allowed AIAS level?

Follow the University of Stirling’s academic integrity processes. The AIAS encourages clear boundaries and rationale to help reduce misconduct.

Does the AIAS replace our academic misconduct policy?

No. The AIAS works alongside our institutional policies. It promotes proactive, transparent use of GenAI to reduce ambiguity, but breaches of declared conditions are still misconduct.

Can I change the AIAS level of an assessment once the module has started?

We would advise against changing the AIAS level of assessments once students have access to the module Canvas pages, but you may change the level up until Week 0. Please make sure you discuss any changes with your ADLT prior to Week 0. Consistency and transparency are key.
